getting real – Postpartum Depression

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Have you wondered about postpartum depression?  Wondered about depression in general?  Struggled to understand it?  Experienced it (in shame) yourself?  The Nummies blog recently shared an article too important not to share called “The Monster in the Closet. On Depression, Shame and Fighting Both“.  All mothers should read this honest, completely raw account of a well-known blogger’s personal experience.

I found myself in tears, because honestly, I’ve never did “get” what this was all about.  I am touched with a renewed sympathy for mothers I’ve known who have fought this battle.  I am sorry that I did not understand.  And, now, I hope you will understand too.

new carriers from Beco!

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Today we received a shipment of new Beco carriers for Spring 2011.  I love the new “Ginger” with it’s colorful dots and lovely birds.   It’s available in the much-loved Gemini carrier, which allows you to carry baby front (facing in or out), back or on the hip!

We also received a few new Butterfly II carriers, which continues to be a favorite model from Beco, since it makes it so easy for anyone to safely achieve the back carry position.  This is the carrier I used, and we loved it!

This limited edition model, called Duke, is such a great modern print for a boy.  The boys aren’t getting left out this time!

Enjoy!

ever suspected your Children’s Medications?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

How often do you give your child baby pain killers like children’s acetaminophen and ibuprofen?  Have you taken a look at the ingredients?

I stumbled across a very interesting article on Healthy Child, Healthy World titled “Surprise! There Are Parabens (and Other Additives) in My Children’s Medications.”  Ironically there is a particular food coloring (yellow 10) in children’s pain killers that isn’t allowed in food, but is approved for use in drugs in the US (not Europe, of course).  Because, you know, the color is what makes it work.

If you want the full scoop, read the article.  But the bottom line is that if you’ve been trying to rid your house of toxins, your children’s medication is another one to consider….  Until a “free and clear” version of baby pain killer is developed, using alternative treatments like homeopathy, herbal treatments and simple rest and love are the healthy way to go.  For more info on how to treat childhood ailments naturally, see this post on a holistic children’s health resource.

Q & A: How to Cover a Toxic Crib Mattress?

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Q:  I am looking to finally introduce my baby to her crib for naps and eventually for sleeping.  However, we can’t afford a healthy crib mattress.  We have a Babee Tenda crib and mattress.   Will the mattress pads on your site help eliminate off-gassing from the toxic mattress that is currently in our crib?  I would like your opinion :) .

I don’t want my baby resting her little head on a toxic mattress. I’ve tried so hard to eliminate all other toxins!

A:  I completely understand your situation.  A new crib mattress is such an investment.  If I were in your situation, I would purchase the Naturepedic crib mattress pad.  I used this pad with my babies – it really is waterproof and washes well.  I’d prefer this over an EcoBaby wool pad because the Naturepedic pad has a very thin layer of safe plastic, which will help seal in the bad chemicals in the mattress.  Since wool is so breathable, a wool pad (while so nice!) would not actually stop toxins from migrating out of the mattress.  Ideally, buy 2 Naturepedic covers so that you can keep one on the crib at all times.

I hope that helps!

Sincerely,

Rachel

Cloth Diapers for Potty Training

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Q:  I have a 17 month old girl that is starting to show signs of being ready for potty training.  I am thinking of changing her to cloth diapers to aid in the process. She is very smart and also a little stubborn so this could be a very short or very long venture in potty training.  I know from previous experience with using cloth training underwear that children seem to potty train easier from cloth than from disposable.

I have never used cloth diapers and since this is my last child (she is the 3rd) I will not be using them after this. What do you recommend as far as cloth diapers in my situation?

A:  I’d love to help!  I started thinking about potty training my girlie around that age too.  Although she daytime potty trained quite well, she needed a diaper at night for years.  But, you know about that with your other kids!  So, I suggest a diaper that fits her now and later – a onesize diaper.  That way your investment lasts until she’s done with diapers, and you don’t have to fret about her growing out of them before she’s totally trained.

BumGenius 3.0 or 4.0 are my go-to diaper.  Everyone I sell them to is happy, and they fit my kids until we didn’t need diapers anymore.  BumGenius 3.0 are on sale (especially in pink), so you could save there.  They are one-size with easy velcro closure.  The only thing about these is that they would have a stay-dry feel against her skin.  The urine passes through the microsuede lining to absorb into an inner removable core (the pocket insert).  Do you want the diaper to feel wet to her?

I assume you do.  In that case, you want cotton against her skin.  The Econobum or Flip Organic both fit the bill.  But, both of these diapers have snap closure, which can be annoying to an older baby who wants/expects a fast change.  I’m not sure how important that is to you.  With the Flip organic day pack for $60 you get 6 changes.  The organic cotton inner is removable.  So, when she wets it, she’ll feel wet and you’d put a new organic cotton inner into the same diaper outer.  These diapers are onesize and are high quality.  The Econobum works like a Flip, but is not as well made.  I would personally stick with the Flip.

Another option is Bummis – velcro diaper covers and cotton prefold inners.  This has velcro closure, would feel wet against her skin and is a high-quality, respected brand.  You could buy just a few covers and prefolds to try the concept with a small investment.  Or you could get the Baby Complete Diaper kit for $99, which really would be everything you need to diaper her through 30 lbs.  Depending on your history with your other children, you’d have to think if she will finish potty training before exceeding 30 lbs.

I hope this helps.  I know it is a lot!  I expect you’ll have questions and would love to help.  Just let me know what you’re thinking!
