Switching to Cloth will Save you a Bundle - even Thousands of Dollars!
Calculate Your Savings
DiaperPin.com, an excellent cloth diaper resource, has the best calculator I've seen for estimating your personalized savings. Before you can run the calculations, you need to know how many diapers you typically use per day, how much those disposables cost you, and how much you will spend on your cloth diaper stash.
Newborn babies aside, you probably change that diaper 5-7 times a day. I used 6 diapers per day in my calculation. How much you spend on disposables will vary wildly depending on the brand and quantities you buy. I recently spent $26 on a 70-pack of Pamper's Cruisers, size 3. If you can, check your records for an accurate calculation. What about the cost of cloth diapers? Your spending here will vary as well, depending on what type and brand you choose, as well as how often you plan to do laundry. We recommend Bum Genius diapers, so if you're not sure use this figure: 15 BumGenius cloth diapers, at $17.95 each. That will diaper one baby, with laundry ever-other-day from newborn to toddler since they are one-size diapers.
Click over to DiaperPin's Cost Calculator. Enter your figures and leave the rest blank. If you currently use Diaper Genie, there's a place for that info too. Notice that this calculator includes estimated costs for energy and water required for laundering.
Wow, Look at those Figures!
If you start with cloth diapers from day one, you would save around $2000, and that's including a second batch of diapers for when your need a larger size. You'll save so much by switching to cloth diapers, that it even makes sense to do so if you're baby is already crawling or toddling around. Our family made the switch when our baby was already 8 months old. We'll still be saving $900! If you plan on having more children, you can expect a high-quality diaper to hold up well enough to serve more than one child. The savings just build and build!
And there's more! High-quality, modern cloth diapers actually have a high resale value. I know, who would have thought? Websites such as DiapersSwappers.com serve moms who sell used diapers for 50-70% of retail value. And the best ones go fast! When you no longer need your cloth diapers, you can sell them and cash in on your investment. How's that for recycling?
This Time Going Green is Cheaper!
We all want what's best for our health and the environment. So often that means paying more for a better product. This time you get a better product for less. It's a win-win situation for the world and for your pocketbook - the catch is you will have to put in a little extra work. Just think of it this way: you'll do a few more loads of laundry per week, and thereby you'll prevent 2 tons worth of pollution from entering our landfills - all while earning a heafty sum for baby's college fund (or your next vacation)!
I hope that I've captured your interest. Cloth diapers really are worth giving a try! If you'd like to learn more about how they work and which ones would be best for you, please read What's the Difference: Types of Cloth Diapers.
