The Prep Wash

The Prep Wash: Cloth Diapers Require a Prep Wash Sequence!

Washing BumGenius Pocket Diapers & Inserts
Prep your microfiber inserts and pocket diapers with a hot/cold wash with a small amount of detergent. This prep wash removes any residues chemical, oily or otherwise that may remain from the manufacturing process. Dry and stuff - you're ready to start cloth diapering!

Washing Organic Caboose Diapers and Hemp Babies Diaper Doublers
Start off by washing these items separate from any other cloth diapers. Hemp and cotton release oily residues during the first few washes - residues that interfere with absorbency. Don't wash these items with other cloth diapers until you've washed them separately 4-5 times. Do 4-5 hot/cold washes, using a normal amount of detergent each time. Dry them fully in the dryer each time before washing again. This can take some time. Just remember, this is a one-time chore that will prepare your diapers to work well.  Be aware that cotton and hemp will shrink considerably after the first wash and a bit more with the next few washes.  This is normal and shrinking was considered when sizing was designed.

Do I really Have To?
You just received your brand new diapers and you're itching to give them a try. Do you have to do the pre-wash? Will they really leak if you don't? I couldn't resist either, so I put a BumGenius pocket diaper on my son while I was washing the others. Guess what - it leaked fast! My washed diapers worked wonderfully, so I can only conclude that pre-washing really is necessary...

You do NOT have to prewash wool diaper covers.
