How to Care for your Washing Machine
Washing cloth diapers gives your machine a work-out several times a week. Just like dishwashers and showers, this machine meant for cleaning needs a little cleaning itself. Each wash cycle may leave behind mineral and detergent residues that build up over time. To keep your machine in tip-top condition, give it a cleaning every few months.
To clean your washing machine, run a hot/cold wash on the highest water setting with nothing in the machine but two cups of vinegar or lemon juice to loosen up soap and grime, plus 1/2 cup of baking soda to combat any odors. Next, run a full cold/cold wash cycle with nothing in the machine. Set the agitator level to high, as you would for heavily soiled clothing, which will help loosen any and all mineral deposits.
If you have a top-loader machine, don't forget to clean the top rim of the wash bucket, up and under the sides of your machine. Remove any bleach or fabric dispensers to clean in hot water.
